The rice:
Absolutely filled with weevils. The guy at the store said they had many many returns of them. Odd that the pallet had not been pulled from the store.
The tinned tomatoes:
Weird spots on the can:
Zooming i on the microscope and rubbing gently with some tweezers, the plastic film protecting the can flakes off extremely easily. The area surrounding the small dark dot is affected. Outside that the film adherence is still not great but clearly much better.
Zooming right in it looks like these are droplets of molten metal, presumably from the manufacturing process.
